One catch is that without a few generations of careful selective breeding, their vivid coloring and shine tend to fade, leaving them looking like plain common carp — which cuts into their resale value. Day to day, maintaining a koi aquaponics system mostly comes down to feeding the fish and checking water parameters — pH, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and temperature — which is a manageable amount of upkeep given the payoff.

Using Existing Koi ponds for Aquaponics

Most people building an aquaponics system start by setting up a tank — anything from an IBC tote to a rigid pond liner or another suitably sized container. One option that’s often overlooked is starting from an already-established pond, such as one that already has koi living in it. This can be a genuinely practical way to launch your system: since the koi are already settled in, all you really need to do is plumb the pond into your grow beds. Beyond the practical side, it also gives you an attractive water feature in your yard. Do keep a closer eye on water levels, since outdoor ponds fluctuate more with the weather, and stay alert to the risk of predators going after your fish.
