An aquaponics setup pairs fish-keeping with soilless plant growing in one loop. You raise fish, and the waste they produce gets broken down by beneficial bacteria into nutrients your plants can absorb directly from the water. This sidesteps a lot of the hassle that comes with standard hydroponics, where you’d otherwise be mixing synthetic nutrient solutions by hand, testing them constantly, and dumping and refilling the reservoir on a regular schedule. In an aquaponic loop, feeding your fish and letting the bacteria do their job is most of the work — the water chemistry largely takes care of itself.
Why raise trout?
Trout ranks among the most widely farmed fish anywhere, largely thanks to its flavor. Setting up a trout-based aquaponics system means you can raise this popular fish at home.
Trout species to consider
Several trout varieties exist, but three come up most often:
- Brook trout — sometimes called speckled trout, typically found in cold streams near mountainous terrain.
- Rainbow trout — arguably the most striking variety, marked by a pink band along the body, dark speckling, and pink-to-red coloring near the gills. Like brook trout they favor cold mountain streams, but they handle temperature swings noticeably better.
- Brown trout — originally a European species, brown in color with spotting that ranges from black through red to orange.
Rainbow trout is generally the best pick for an aquaponics setup. The reason isn’t looks or fighting spirit — it comes down to hardiness. Rainbow trout tolerate a broader range of conditions than the other two, which translates into less fuss for you as the grower. They also put on size quickly, which matters whether your goal is selling extra fish, eating them yourself, or simply keeping pace with the crops you’re growing — faster fish growth supports faster nutrient supply for more plants. A major point in their favor is their ability to handle a wide temperature band, which helps keep nutrient production steady for your plants.
Sourcing trout
Starting with trout fingerlings is worth strong consideration. Fingerlings cost noticeably less than mature rainbow trout, and they’re also more flexible — they’ll adjust to whatever conditions your system provides and do reasonably well even when those conditions aren’t textbook-perfect for adult trout. That said, this doesn’t give you a free pass on water quality; you still need to keep an eye on pH and other chemistry. One added benefit: fingerlings, because their digestive systems are still maturing, tend to produce a lot of waste relative to their size. Stocking fingerlings can therefore boost the nutrient supply available to your plants, which can mean a bigger harvest or room for more plants overall. Local fish farms are a good place to check for availability.
Advantages of trout in an aquaponics system
- Easy to maintain — trout require very little intervention to stay healthy; they largely manage on their own.
- Quick growth — trout reach market size (roughly 40 cm, or about 15 inches) in around nine months. Pan-sized fish take about 12 to 13 months, which is still fast next to many other species — meaning you can cycle through generations relatively quickly.
- Strong feed conversion — in the wild, trout eat mollusks, flies, and crustaceans, all rich in energy, lipids, and fish oil. Since replicating that exact diet isn’t practical, use a purpose-made commercial trout feed instead.
- Suited to cool water — trout do well in cooler climates, thriving in water between roughly 10 and 20°C (50 to 68°F).
Drawbacks of trout in an aquaponics system
- Needs plenty of space — trout need strong water flow to be raised at high density, so if you’re aiming for a larger system, keep stocking to no more than about 0.5 kg of fish per 100 liters of water.
- Narrow comfort zone on temperature — trout can survive anywhere from 0 to 22°C (32 to 72°F), but they only grow well between 12 and 16°C (53 to 61°F). Once water climbs past 22°C (72°F), their digestion becomes inefficient and much of what they eat is wasted rather than converted into growth.
- High oxygen demand — trout need dissolved oxygen levels of at least 5.5 mg/L. If you stock too densely, oxygen can become scarce and the fish will struggle.
Other things to keep in mind
Raising trout at home isn’t the simplest option. Commercial trout farms typically use raceways with substantial water movement, and replicating that means providing considerably more flow than a tilapia system would need, in order to mimic the small, fast-moving streams trout are adapted to. You’ll also want to keep the system in a cold climate — actively chilling the water to compensate is a costly workaround, so it’s better to work with a naturally cool environment from the start.
