The grow bed might be the single most important component in your aquaponics setup. Pick the right one and your plants will take off; get it wrong and they’ll struggle no matter what else you do right. Something like a concrete container, for instance, will shift your water’s pH and make it tough to keep conditions favorable for your crops. Beyond chemistry, though, the grow bed’s job is to give your plants enough room to develop properly, and its size is tied directly to how many fish your system can support. Get the balance wrong in either direction and you’ll end up short-changing either your plants’ nutrition or your fish’s water quality. It’s usually the biggest physical component in the whole system, but it’s also where you’ll see the most payoff. The grow bed is where nitrifying bacteria live and do their work — if it’s undersized (not enough surface area for bacteria to colonize), ammonia in your water won’t get converted into nitrates the way it needs to.

What does a grow bed actually do?

Your grow bed has to be sized to match the rest of your system. There’s a direct relationship between your fish tank’s size and how large your grow bed needs to be, because the volume of fish waste produced determines how many plants the system can support. Fish generate ammonia, and bacteria living on your growing media convert that ammonia first into nitrites and then into nitrates, which is the form your plants can actually absorb as food. Stock too many fish or overfeed them and you’ll generate more ammonia and nitrate than your media can handle — without enough grow bed capacity, that excess will gradually poison the water your fish live in. Go too light on fish, on the other hand, and your plants won’t get enough nutrients to thrive.

As a starting benchmark, aim for roughly 50 square feet of media surface area per pound of full-grown fish, and about 8 gallons of tank water per pound of full-grown fish.

Here’s a worked example: say you plan to fill your media bed with expanded clay pebbles (hydroton), which offer roughly 70 square feet of surface area per cubic foot. A 16 cubic-foot bed filled with this media gives you a total surface area of about 1,120 square feet (16 × 70). Premium grow beds versus building your own

Here’s some good news: a budget-friendly, homemade grow bed can perform every bit as well as a pricier commercial one. What actually matters isn’t how much you spent — it’s whether the bed fits well with the rest of your system. That said, pay attention to what it’s built from. Water plus growing media adds up to serious weight, so your container needs to be sturdy enough to bear that load, and it obviously needs to hold water without leaking.

Supporting your grow bed

Plan for your grow bed to hold around 14 inches of growing media — that depth gives you the flexibility to grow a wide variety of plants. A lot of people like to mount the grow bed directly above the fish tank, since it cuts down on plumbing and keeps the whole system more compact. Just make sure your tank can actually bear that load, and keep in mind that you’ll periodically need access to check on your fish, which usually means cutting an opening that can weaken the tank’s structure. That doesn’t rule out this approach, though — the popular “chop and flip” method works well: you cut roughly a third off the top of an IBC tote, flip that piece over, and set it on top of the remaining base using the tote’s original steel cage as the support frame.

IBC tote beds

Track down an IBC tote — sometimes you can find one for free. Strip off the metal cage, cut off the top third of the plastic tank, and flip that section upside down. It rests neatly on the original cage frame, giving you a ready-made grow bed while the remaining lower portion of the tote serves as your fish tank.

55-gallon barrel beds

Barrels are another option you can often source at no cost. Just be sure to scrub one out thoroughly before using it — you don’t want any residual chemicals leaching into your aquaponics system.

Timber frame with a pond liner

If you’ve got scrap lumber on hand and some carpentry skills, building a wooden frame is a solid option. A basic frame with a wood floor lined with plastic pond liner keeps your media and water contained. If you’re up for a bigger project, you can build your fish tank the same way, and this approach lets you pick whatever size and shape suits your space.

Free or discounted plastic tubs

How many siphons does a grow bed need?

You’ll need a pump to move water from your fish tank up to the grow bed, but the most efficient way to send that water back down to the tank is through a siphon. The tricky part is figuring out how many siphons your setup actually needs — and the answer depends on which type of grow bed you’ve built.

IBC tote beds

An IBC-based grow bed sitting above your fish tank typically only needs a single siphon. These beds run around 16 square feet, and any bed smaller than that can usually get by with just as few — or fewer — siphons.
