Wicking beds are a growing method that pairs naturally with aquaponics, and if you’ve never tried one before, this guide walks you through what they are and how to build your own. Aquaponics rewards experimentation, and trying different growing techniques is part of the fun of raising your own food. Wicking beds were originally developed as a way to keep plants hydrated in arid, desert-like climates, and that same water-conserving design works just as well anywhere — it keeps your plants supplied with moisture and nutrients while cutting down on the effort needed to maintain them.

What is a wicking bed?

A standalone wicking bed is normally topped up with collected rainwater, but when you connect one to your aquaponics setup, the water arriving at the roots is already loaded with nitrates from your fish. This makes wicking beds especially well suited to root crops like carrots and potatoes, and many growers consider it the closest thing to traditional soil gardening you can do within an aquaponics system.

The setup relies on roughly three inches of wicking material at the bottom of the container. This layer draws water upward through capillary action into the soil sitting above it. Picture it as three layers: a reservoir fed by your fish tank at the bottom, three inches of wicking material soaking up that water, and a bed of soil on top where your plants grow and stretch their roots down toward the moisture.

A few materials work well for the wicking layer, each with tradeoffs:

  • Straw – soaks up water readily, though it breaks down faster than other options.
  • Vermiculite – holds a strong water reserve thanks to its porous structure, but can sometimes cling to moisture rather than releasing it to the roots.
  • Coco coir – a solid all-around choice, particularly for crops like onions and garlic, since it balances water retention, structural support, and airflow reasonably well.

Because the water sits beneath the soil surface instead of on top of it, evaporation is minimal — a major advantage in hot, dry conditions where a wicking bed can keep plants thriving even through extreme heat. Water is typically pumped from the fish tank into the base of the system about once a week, entering through a pipe positioned at the top of the grow bed so that soil and debris don’t wash down into the wicking layer.

Why add a wicking bed to your aquaponics system?

A wicking bed lets you grow more plants without having to enlarge your fish tank, since it taps into water you’re already producing. It also opens the door to growing a wider range of crops and testing out different growing approaches to find what suits your setup best. On top of that, it’s genuinely simple to add onto an aquaponics system you already have running.

Weighing the pros and cons

Like any growing method, wicking beds come with real benefits alongside a few tradeoffs worth planning around.

Advantages

  • More growing space – you can scale your wicking bed up as far as your fish tank’s water supply allows.
  • Simple to build – nearly any container works, and all you need beyond that is an inlet pipe, an overflow drain, wicking material, and soil.
  • Water savings – this method can use roughly half the water that conventional soil growing requires.
  • Fewer weeds – because moisture rises from below, the top layer of soil stays relatively dry, which makes it harder for weed seeds to take hold.
  • Minimal upkeep – once it’s running, a weekly watering cycle plus harvesting is about all it needs.

Drawbacks

  • Placement matters – your wicking bed needs to sit after a standard aquaponics grow bed in the water flow, so beneficial bacteria have already converted ammonia into nitrates. If that’s not possible in your layout, you’ll need a separate biofilter ahead of the wicking bed.
  • Water can’t be reused for fish – water drawn off into the wicking bed shouldn’t be returned to your fish tank, so you’ll need to top up your system with fresh water at the correct temperature and pH afterward.
  • Added cost – building your own keeps expenses down, but a wicking bed will still typically cost more than a basic raised garden bed.
  • Moisture balance – the soil needs to stay consistently moist without becoming waterlogged, since certain vegetables won’t perform well if it holds too much water (see the plant recommendations below).

How to build a wicking bed for your aquaponics system

Building your own wicking bed is a manageable weekend project. Here’s the process broken into steps.

1. Choose a container

Almost any sturdy vessel will do — a repurposed pond liner, an old bathtub, or even a retired refrigerator shell, or you can buy a fiberglass tub made for the purpose. There’s no strict depth requirement, but plan for at least three inches of wicking material at the bottom, and ideally six to eight inches of soil above it depending on what you intend to grow and how deep those plants’ roots reach.

2. Install the plumbing

You’ll need two pipes. The first runs from the base of the container upward past its rim and delivers water in; drill holes near its base so water can spread out into the wicking layer, and consider adding a 90-degree bend that runs along the container floor to help distribute water evenly. Match this pipe’s diameter to your pump’s outlet to avoid flow problems or leaks.

Position the second pipe at the opposite end of the bed. It should also extend above the container’s rim, with holes drilled near its base to let water in, and it needs a T-fitting so excess water has somewhere to overflow. Set that T-fitting at the same height as the top of your wicking material layer.

Tip: Add a clear viewing panel to the side of your container covering roughly the bottom three to four inches, sealed with silicone, so you can see the water level at a glance. The portion of the overflow pipe that extends above the container also doubles as a handy way to check the water level visually.

3. Prepare the bed

Spread your chosen wicking material evenly across the base, keeping it about three inches deep. Before adding soil, lay down a layer of weed-blocking fabric — this keeps roots from tangling into the wicking layer and disrupting water flow. Once that’s in place, add soil on top to a depth of roughly six to twelve inches, depending on your plants’ needs.

4. Test the system before planting

Run your pump to fill the wicking area before adding any plants — tap water is fine for this test run. This tells you how long the pump needs to run each cycle and confirms your soil won’t float once saturated. You’ll know the bed is full once water begins flowing out of the overflow pipe. Once you’re satisfied with the setup and the soil is evenly moist throughout, you’re ready to plant.

Best plants for a wicking bed

Wicking beds particularly favor root and tuber crops — think potatoes, beets, and carrots — along with lettuces and most other common vegetables. This is really the growing method’s strong suit. Trees and other deep-rooted perennials tend not to do as well, since their root systems need more room than a wicking bed typically provides. Don’t hesitate to experiment with different setups and plant choices until you find what works best for your own system.
