Every aquaponics system needs three key nutrients added on a regular basis to stay healthy: iron, calcium, and potassium. Calcium and potassium usually arrive together in whatever blend you use to raise your pH. Iron, on the other hand, often gets overlooked — which is exactly why so many aquaponics setups end up running short on it.
How to spot Iron deficiency
The clearest sign of low iron shows up on the leaves of your plants. Watch for foliage that fades toward yellow while the veins running through the leaf stay noticeably green — this pattern has a name: chlorosis.

What kind of Iron do you need?

Dosing Iron into your system

Research from the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) aquaponics program, run on deep-water-culture raft troughs, added 2 mg of elemental iron per liter every three weeks — equivalent to 2 PPM.
Keep in mind that most iron products on the market are not pure iron; they only contain a percentage of it. A product that is 10% iron, for example, means you would need 20 mg of that product per liter to actually deliver 2 mg of elemental iron.
Converted to a more familiar unit, 20 mg per liter works out to about 75 mg of product per gallon of system water. In practice: measure out roughly 75 mg of a 10%-iron chelate for every gallon in your system, and repeat the dose every three weeks.
Method 2: Dosing Iron going from measurements (Requires meter)
This approach is more precise but depends on owning an iron meter so you can measure your current reading first. Once you have that number, apply this two-step formula:
- Target iron level minus your actual measured PPM equals the amount, in PPM, that you need to add.
- That amount, multiplied by 100 divided by the percentage of iron in your product, gives you the milligrams needed per liter.
Worked example: Say you are running a 100-gallon system and your meter reads 1.9 PPM. You are dosing with a chelated iron product that is 10% DTPA.
- 2.5 PPM target minus 1.9 PPM measured equals 0.6 PPM still needed
- 0.6 PPM multiplied by 100 divided by 10 equals 6 PPM, or 6 mg per liter of product
- 100 gallons converts to roughly 378 liters
- 378 liters multiplied by 6 mg equals 2,268 mg, or about 2.27 grams of product to add
